Lifestyle Medicine
About Lifestyle Medicine
Lifestyle medicine focuses on using lifestyle changes to help treat chronic medical conditions including hypertension, diabetes, hyperlipidemia, and heart disease. Lifestyle medicine utilizes 6 pillars of health. The six pillars include a predominantly whole food plant based diet, physical activity, restorative sleep, stress management, avoiding risky substances, and positive social connections.
Pillar 1:
Whole Food Plant Based Diet
Whole Food Plant Based Diet
A whole food plant based diet has been shown to lower the risk of cardiovascular and metabolic diseases (including hypertension and type 2 diabetes). A whole food predominantly plant based diet is also associated with decreased weight.
Pillar 2:
Physical Activity
Physical Activity
Getting at least 150-300 min of moderate intensity exercise or 75-150 min of vigorous intensity exercise reduces the risk of death from cardiovascular disease.
Pillar 3:
Restorative Sleep
Restorative Sleep
Adults over the age of 18 should get 7-9 hours of quality sleep. Inadequate or poor sleep quality can increase the risk of diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and obesity.
Pillar 4:
Stress Management
Stress Management
Chronic stress increases the risk of obesity, hypertension, heart disease, and diabetes. Maintaining appropriate levels of stress and developing good coping mechanisms is important in your overall health.
Pillar 5:
Avoiding Risky Substances
Avoiding Risky Substances
No surprise here. Tobacco, alcohol and recreational drugs, can all have negative impacts on your health and longevity. Avoiding these habits can have a substantial impact on your life and your health.
Pillar 6:
Positive Social Connections
Positive Social Connections
Positive social connections are associated with a increased risk of mortality and decreased risk of coronary heart, anxiety, depression.
